What a previsualization artist does
A previsualization artist, or previs artist, builds rough 3D animated versions of scenes before they are shot. A director uses previs to decide staging, camera moves and timing while changes are still cheap.
The job
A previs artist turns scripts and storyboards into 3D sequences. A previs artist places characters, sets and cameras in a scene. A previs artist chooses lenses, angles and camera moves to shape how each shot reads. A previs artist animates the action roughly, to get its timing right. A previs artist cuts shots into sequences with temporary effects and sound. A previs artist changes sequences quickly in response to the director's notes.
What a previs artist delivers
| Deliverable | When | What it is | Used by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pitchvis | Before a project is approved | Early concept sequences made to win producer or studio support | Producers and studios |
| Previs | Pre-production | Detailed 3D sequences of scenes before filming | Director, cinematographer, VFX supervisor |
| Techvis | Pre-production and prep | Technical breakdowns of complex setups, such as camera positions, lenses, rigs and distances | Camera, grip, art and VFX departments |
| Stuntvis | Prep | Planning of stunt sequences, including safety | Stunt coordinator and director |
| Postvis | Post-production | Temporary composites of filmed footage with rough visual effects, made for editing before final effects are ready | Editor and VFX team |
Who a previs artist works with
- The director is a previs artist's main creative partner.
- The VFX supervisor uses previs to plan effects shots.
- The cinematographer uses previs to plan lenses, camera positions and moves.
- The production designer uses previs to check sets against the shots planned in them.
- Layout artists and technical directors carry previs decisions into later stages.
- Production management uses previs to schedule and budget complex sequences.
Where previs sits in a production
Previs artists work across the whole production, not only before filming. Pitchvis and previs happen in pre-production. Techvis and stuntvis support preparation and the shoot itself. Postvis happens in post-production, after footage exists. Studios that specialise in visualization include The Third Floor, Halon Entertainment and Proof.
Software previs artists use
- Maya is widely used for animation and layout.
- 3ds Max is used for environments.
- MotionBuilder is used for motion capture.
- Nuke is used for compositing, especially in postvis.
- Unreal Engine is increasingly used because it renders changes instantly.
- Blender is increasingly used because it is free and accessible.
Skills a previs artist needs
- Cinematography: lenses, composition, screen direction and coverage.
- Animation timing: making action read at the right speed.
- 3D proficiency in at least one of the tools used in production.
- Editorial judgment: knowing where a cut lands and how long a shot should hold.
- Familiarity with motion capture.
- Speed: turning creative notes into a revised sequence quickly.
How people become previs artists
Many previs artists move into the role from layout, environment or animation work. A previs showreel of 60 to 90 seconds should show clear storytelling and clean technical execution. A showreel of short sequences with deliberate camera work demonstrates previs skills better than polished renders do.
Previs artist vs storyboard artist
A storyboard artist draws 2D frames that show what each shot contains. A previs artist builds 3D sequences with real cameras, real lenses and real timing. Storyboards usually come first, and previs artists often work from them. The full comparison is in Previs vs storyboard vs animatic.
Previs skills in AI video
Previs skills now apply to AI video generation. Text prompts describe camera moves poorly, and a previs clip shows a camera move exactly. A previs artist's camera and timing judgment is the part of the job a video model cannot supply. The reasons are in How to control camera movement in AI video.
Frequently asked
What does a previs artist do?
A previs artist builds rough 3D animated versions of scenes before they are shot. A previs artist places characters, sets and cameras, chooses lenses and camera moves, and times the action. Directors use the result to plan staging, camera work and timing.
What is the difference between previs and postvis?
Previs is made before filming, using placeholder 3D sets and characters. Postvis is made after filming, by combining real footage with rough visual effects. Editors use postvis to cut scenes before the final effects are finished.
What software do previs artists use?
Previs artists commonly use Maya for animation and layout, MotionBuilder for motion capture and Nuke for compositing. Unreal Engine and Blender are increasingly common.
How do you become a previs artist?
Many previs artists start in layout, environment or animation roles. A showreel of 60 to 90 seconds of short sequences with clear camera work is the usual way to show previs skills.
Is previs the same as layout?
No. Previs happens early, with placeholder assets, to decide what the shots should be. Layout is a later production stage that sets cameras and staging with the real assets. Layout artists often start from the previs.
